Parental Alienation

23/11/2020

The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) believe that 5% of children involved in divorce or separation will experience some level of parental alienation.

Parental alientaion is the term used to describe the deliberate manipulation of a child by one parent against the other parent during a divorce or separation.

This is incredibly damaging to the child and the immediate and future realtionship they have with the non resident parent.  Many believe that mandatory mediation and therapeutic intervention at an early stage would help to prevent or minimise this damage.

Certain countries have taken this a step further, In Mexico for example parental alienation is illegal, if found guilty parents can recieve a custodial sentance.

The UK does not yet have legislation, but judges are recognising parental alienation and on occasion this is leading to the removal of the child from the offending parent.
