Couples across Essex who are separating or divorcing are set to benefit from a new Government pledge to fund more free family mediation sessions.

An announcement by Justice Minister Simon Hughes pledges a free mediation session for couples involved in a separation if just one of them qualifies for legal aid. A move hailed many as a ‘vital first step’ to raise awareness of mediation and its benefits.

At present if one party is Legally aided then their mediation is free but the non aided party has to pay. This new move will mean that the fee payer will also be entitled to their first session free of charge and therefore should encourage a greater take up of mediation locally and nationally.

Mediation puts families in control of their future instead of handing it over to clogged family courts.  It’s a much quicker, less confrontational and better value way of settling family breakdown than heading off to court.
